Wyckham Blackwell started business in 1884 as home grown timber merchants and have since evolved through saw milling, fencing, specialist joinery, merchanting and DIY to become a true specialist in timber engineered products. They work with clients ranging from the self-builders through to national house builders as well as multi-national construction companies.
The joinery team manufacture timber frames as well as a range standard and specialist roof trusses. During the manufacture of these products hardwood, softwood and MDF dusts within the Workshop environment are produced which can be severely hazardous to the health of their workforce.
Wyckham Blackwell operate a fully audited Health and Safety Policy and have a statutory requirement under the CoSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations, to control the exposure of these substances to as far below the WEL (Workplace Exposure Levels) as is reasonably practical. In order to comply with these regulations and to comply with their Health and Safety Policy they have in place 11 Local Exhaust Ventilation (LEV) systems within their 5 workshops to remove the airbourne contaminants at source.
Having previously worked with P&J Dust Extraction for over 6 years, whose specialist qualified LEV Test Engineers carry out Wyckham’s yearly statutory examination and test, the Director contacted P&J in late 2013 and asked for their advice on upgrading their current LEV Extraction system when they added a new 10” rip saw.
One of our LEV Engineers, very familiar with the site, liaised with the Director to offer the most effective solution and recommended one of their PJ1 bag dust extraction unit which is designed and manufactured at their own site.
P&J’s installation team connected the unit up to the additional machine and to ensure continued compliance with the CoSHH Regulations our LEV Test Engineer commissioned the new unit as required by HSG258.
In January 2014 P&J, UKAS accredited for LEV Testing, LEV Inspection & LEV Commissioning, sent one of their AILEVE & BOHS qualified Test Engineers to undertake the Companies yearly thorough examination and test in all 5 of their woodworking premises containing 11 separate LEV systems.
As standard our Test Engineer liaised closely with the Director to carry out all the necessary checks, readings and condition of all elements of the LEV system including; extraction hoods, ducting, pressure gauges, collection methods, explosion relief, filters, etc.
Whilst onsite the P&J Engineer rebalanced the airflows on the LEV in the sawing workshop. He renewed their existing maintenance log book and issued a new one for completion over the coming year.
In April 2014, Wykham’s Director once again contacted P&J Dust Extraction for replacement filters and 80mm flexible hose. Our LEV Test Engineer arrived onsite to carry out the correct and safe fitting of these replacement items on one of their LEV systems and subsequently carried out the obligatory commissioning of this system to once again ensure continued compliance with the CoSHH Regulations and HSG258 as well as effective operation of the LEV.
At the end of July 2014 Wykham updated their set up again with the additional of a new Humdegger saw. One of our LEV Engineers advised the inclusion of one of their manufactured, modular systems; a PJ3 bag with 12 filters within a filter house as the most suitable for this process. And again we returned to site to commission this unit in accordance with all the necessary Health & Safety regulations.
In February 2015, P&J Dust Extraction will once again carry out Wykham Blackwell’s yearly statutory thorough examination and test in their sawing workshop, joinery workshop, building No.1, shed 2 and workshop no.1 for their 11 separate LEV systems.
Each time P&J carried out any works onsite our Engineer made sure that before he left site he had fully briefed and discussed his findings with the Director to confirm she was fully happy with the LEV that had been altered and upgraded. The completed comprehensive reports are usually emailed usually within 48 hours of arriving back to their head office.
